Avinox vs Bosch: Which eBike Motor Is Right for You?

If you’re in the market for an electric mountain bike (eMTB), there’s a good chance you’ll come across two names again and again: Bosch and Avinox.

Bosch has been one of the biggest names in eBike motors for years, while Avinox is the exciting newer arrival that’s quickly appearing on more eMTBs. So, which should you choose?

The answer isn’t simply that one is better than the other. It depends on how you ride and what matters most to you.

Why choose Avinox?

Avinox has created a lot of excitement in the eMTB world, and it’s easy to see why.

Its drive systems combine serious power with impressively low weight and compact dimensions. For riders tackling steep climbs and technical trails, that extra performance can be immediately noticeable.

Avinox could be particularly appealing if you:

  • Want plenty of power for steep and technical riding
  • Value a strong power-to-weight ratio
  • Like having the latest eBike technology
  • Want fast battery charging
  • Prefer a particularly punchy, powerful feel from your eMTB

It’s a very impressive system, especially for performance focused riders.

But there’s another side to all that performance. More power doesn’t necessarily mean a better ride

We’ve ridden with Avinox owners on plenty of longer rides and have seen first hand just how impressive the performance can be, particularly on climbs where they can absolutely fly! On longer days though, battery range becomes more important, so riders often dial the assistance back to conserve power and end up riding at similar levels to their Bosch companions. The advantage is that the extra power is there when you want it.

Why choose Bosch?

Don’t mistake the excitement around Avinox for Bosch suddenly being old news.

The Bosch platform has been developed and proven over many years, with an extensive dealer and service network behind it. Bosch’s Performance Line CX is powerful, refined and extremely well established, and its smooth, natural feeling assistance makes it an excellent all rounder for everything from trail centres to long days exploring.

Bosch could be the better fit if you:

  • Want a tried-and-tested eBike system
  • Value long-term service and support
  • Prefer smooth, refined power delivery
  • Want access to a huge ecosystem of compatible products and services
  • Simply want an excellent eBike without needing the latest headline specifications

And while Avinox attracts plenty of attention for its performance figures, the latest Bosch CX systems aren’t short on power. For most riders, both systems offer more than enough assistance for everyday trail riding.

Don’t choose your eBike on the motor alone

This is perhaps the most important point. A great motor doesn’t automatically make a great bike.

Geometry, suspension, brakes, components, battery capacity, weight and – most importantly – how the bike fits you can have a much bigger impact on how much you enjoy riding it.

A Bosch powered bike that suits you perfectly could be a much better purchase than an Avinox bike that doesn’t – and vice versa.

That’s why we’d always recommend looking at the whole bike, rather than choosing purely on torque figures or motor specifications.

So, which should you buy?

Think of them less as better versus worse and more as two slightly different propositions.

Avinox brings exciting technology, impressive power-to-weight and huge performance when you want it.

Bosch brings refinement, proven performance and an exceptionally well-established ecosystem.

Our best advice? Try both. Test rides are available at the Powerhouse, so you can get a feel for the bikes, compare the different systems and find the bike that best suits the way you ride.

The best eBike isn’t necessarily the one with the biggest numbers on the spec sheet – it’s the one that suits you and the way you actually ride.
